Eurozone Construction Output Rises in April

Eurozone construction output increased by 0.9% year-on-year in April 2026, following an upwardly revised 0.2% gain in March. Growth in specialized construction activities strengthened to 1.7%, up from 0.6% in the previous month. By contrast, building construction continued to contract, although the pace of decline eased to 5.2% from 7.1% in March. Growth in civil engineering also moderated, slowing to 4.4% from 5.3%. Construction activity expanded in Germany (2.6% vs. 0.4%) and Spain (1.4% vs. -5.9%) but declined in France (-2.9% vs. -3.3%), Belgium (-3.8% vs. 3.4%) and the Netherlands (-3.3% vs. 2.3%). On a monthly basis, construction output rose by 0.6%, easing from a 1.7% rise in the previous month.

Eurozone construction output fell by 1.2% year over year in March 2026, following an upwardly revised 3% slump in February, marking a third consecutive month of contraction in the sector. Building activity remained the key drag, dropping 7.1%, even as the pace of decline moderated from 10% in the month before. At the same time, output fell less for specialized construction activities (-0.7% vs -1%), while it rebounded for civil engineering (3% vs -3.3%). Among major economies, output fell in Germany (-1.5% vs -3.6%), France (-3.3% vs -3.5%) and Spain (-4.4% vs -14.9%) and Italy (-0.2% vs 0.8%). On a monthly basis, construction output rose by 0.8%, after an upwardly revised 0.8% decrease in the prior month.

Eurozone construction output declined by 1.9% year over year in February 2026, following an upwardly revised 4.1% drop in January, marking a second consecutive month of contraction in the sector. Building activity remained the main drag, slipping 8.1%, though the pace of decline eased from 12.9% in the previous month. Output also fell at a softer pace for civil engineering (-1.9% vs -3.8%) and specialized construction activities (-0.1% vs -1.3%). Among major economies, output fell in Germany (-2.5% vs -6.8%), France (-3.5% vs -1.5%) and Spain (-10.2% vs 18.6%), while Italy recorded growth (1.4% vs -0.4%). On a monthly basis, construction output fell by 0.2%, after an upwardly revised 1.3% decrease in the prior month.
