South Africa’s 10-year government bond yield eased slightly to below 8.90%, its lowest since September 23 and tracking other major peers.
The decline came amid a global selloff in equity markets, led by the tech sector, driven by AI-related concerns and fears over high borrowing costs amid persistent inflationary pressures.
In South Africa, the inflation outlook remains challenging, particularly in the wake of the recent steep increases in fuel prices.
SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago told Reuters on the sidelines of the annual IMF/World Bank meetings that there are still plenty of risks that could derail the fight against inflation, including higher global energy and food prices and weather-related threats such as El Niño.
He warned that inflation may remain above target until 2028, reinforcing the case for a restrictive policy stance.
Meanwhile, investors will look to next week’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement for evidence of the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline.
