The South African rand eased to around 16.7 per USD, as lingering uncertainty over a potential US–Iran peace deal increased safe-haven demand for the US dollar.
At the same time, lower prices for key precious metals, including PGMs and gold, weighed on the currency.
Some relief came after President Trump paused a planned attack on Iran at the request of Gulf leaders seeking more time for diplomacy, but doubts persisted over a swift resolution to the conflict, while inflationary pressures remained elevated.
Domestically, investors shifted their attention to looming April inflation data expected to reflect lagged pass-through from higher global prices, alongside domestic fuel and electricity increases in South Africa.
The central bank will pay close attention to the inflation release to gauge existing price pressures ahead of its policy meeting later in the month.
