New Zealand stocks dropped 21 points, or 0.2%, to 13,954 in Monday morning trade, after gaining in the previous session, tracking a decline on Wall Street on Friday amid expectations that the Fed would raise interest rates at its upcoming meeting following stronger-than-expected labor data.
Traders were cautious ahead of China’s CPI and PPI data, as well as trade figures for August, due later this week.
Investors also monitored developments in the Middle East conflict after Tehran said it had targeted oil tankers in response to US strikes.
Traders also continued to assess Friday's statement from RBNZ Assistant Governor Karen Silk, which signaled that New Zealand’s central bank is more likely to wait until December before raising interest rates again.
The tech, consumer discretionary, energy, and financial sectors mainly weighed on the index, with early losers including Ryman Healthcare (-1.0%), ANZ Group (-0.8%), Infratil (-0.8%), and Channel Infrastructure (-0.6%).
