The NZX 50 fell 40 points, or 0.3%, to close at 13,656 on Tuesday, after being flat in the previous session, as traders assessed inflation data and evaluated its impact on the central bank's interest rate decision at the upcoming meeting.

The latest data showed that New Zealand's inflation rate accelerated to the highest level since Q4 2023.

Persistently high oil prices also pressured sentiment, as inflation concerns fueled expectations of further interest rate hikes.

RBNZ Chief Economist Paul Conway recently warned that sticky inflation could prompt further monetary policy tightening.

A decline on Wall Street overnight also further pressured sentiment amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Communication services, consumer staples, and healthcare stocks mainly weighed on the index, with the biggest laggards including A2 Milk (-1.8%), Ebos Group (-1.7%), Freightways Group (-1.6%), Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (-1.5%), and Scales Corporation (-1.5%).
