NZ 10Y Bond Yield Hits 34-month High

New Zealand’s 10-year government bond yield surged to an intraday high of 5.11% in late September, its highest level since November 2023, tracking a global bond selloff as elevated oil prices stoked inflation concerns. The intensifying selloff pushed US Treasury yields to multi-year highs, as markets raised expectations for a higher-for-longer path from the Federal Reserve. The rise in global yields added to upward pressure on New Zealand’s long-term borrowing costs, alongside rising expectations for further tightening by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Markets are now pricing in about a 75% chance of a third hike in October, up sharply from earlier this month. This follows Governor Anna Breman’s warning that sustained oil price increases could push near-term inflation above the central bank’s latest forecast. However, her emphasis on an uneven economic recovery highlighted the challenge of addressing inflation risks while supporting still-fragile domestic growth.

New Zealand’s 10-year government bond yield climbed to around 4.89% in early September, reaching its highest level since May 2024, driven by inflation concerns following a surge in oil prices. Brent crude remained above $100 a barrel as escalating Middle East tensions threatened deeper disruptions to energy supplies, raising inflation risks and expectations that central banks may keep monetary policy tighter for longer. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand raised the official cash rate by 25 bps to 2.75% last week as inflation reached 4.1% in the June quarter, saying the OCR may rise further as inflation is expected to remain elevated this year. Markets are pricing in at least one additional OCR hike, with rates seen reaching around 3% by the end of 2026. Higher US Treasury yields also added to the upward pressure, with the US 10-year yield reaching its highest level since 2023 after the US Treasury’s $6 billion bond buyback fell short of expectations.
