New Zealand Dollar Stabilizes

2026-09-11 02:39 By Judith Sib-at 1 min. read

The New Zealand dollar stabilized around $0.580 after falling 0.7% overnight to its lowest level since late July, as the US dollar firmed amid increased expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike next week.

Also weighing on the kiwi is a dovish shift in the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s policy outlook, with recent comments from policymakers reinforcing the central bank’s gradual approach to further tightening.

Markets now largely expect the RBNZ to leave interest rates unchanged in October, although a December hike remains almost fully priced in.

On the data front, growth in New Zealand’s manufacturing sector slowed in August, with businesses pointing to cost-of-living pressures and the Middle East conflict as headwinds to activity.

The kiwi is down more than 1% this week, heading for its third consecutive weekly decline.

New Zealand Dollar Trades Near Six-Week Low
The New Zealand dollar edged up to around $0.585 but remained near a six-week low hit in the previous session, amid a dovish shift in the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s policy outlook. Recent remarks from policymakers have further reinforced the more measured approach to further tightening, with some appearing increasingly concerned about economic growth than inflation. Markets now largely expect the central bank to keep rates steady in October, while a December hike remains priced in as near certain. Investors are awaiting BusinessNZ’s PMI on Friday and second-quarter GDP data next week for fresh clues on economic conditions and the RBNZ’s policy path. Meanwhile, the kiwi remained near a 13-year low against the Australian dollar, reflecting diverging interest-rate outlooks between the two central banks.

New Zealand Dollar Holds Decline
The New Zealand dollar traded around $0.585 after two consecutive sessions of modest losses, as markets reassessed the interest-rate outlook from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The kiwi remained pressured by the RBNZ’s dovish rate hike last week and recent comments from policymakers have also pointed to a more cautious approach to further tightening, with some appearing increasingly concerned about economic growth. Markets now imply around an 80% chance of the central bank leaving rates unchanged in October, while a December increase remains largely priced in. The kiwi dollar also struggled at a 13-year low against the Australian dollar, amid diverging monetary-policy paths between the neighboring nations, though both currencies received some support from a weaker US dollar.
