New Zealand Dollar Trades Near Multi-Month Highs

2026-08-24 02:17 By Judith Sib-at 1 min. read

The New Zealand dollar hovered around $0.597 on Monday, close to three-month highs, supported by broad weakness in the US dollar.

The greenback remained under pressure following the US Treasury’s announcement last week that it would increase its purchases of longer-dated government bonds.

Meanwhile, investors awaited details on what the US has billed as its toughest-ever sanctions campaign against Iran.

Tehran, however, dismissed the threat of intensified sanctions over the weekend, keeping tensions elevated.

On the data front, New Zealand retail sales fell 0.5% in the June quarter, missing expectations for a 0.1% gain and reversing a 1% increase in the previous quarter.

This points to weakening consumer demand, raising concerns about the country’s economic recovery and potentially limiting the scope for further rate hikes.

Still, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is widely expected to raise interest rates again in September as inflation remains elevated.

New Zealand Dollar Rises Further on Weaker US Dollar
The New Zealand dollar climbed to $0.598, the highest level since late May, as the greenback tumbled following US intervention in the Treasury market. The US Treasury announced plans to double its buybacks of longer-dated government debt, a move aimed at improving market liquidity and curbing a sharp rise in yields that had reached multi-decade highs. This helped ease pressure on risk-sensitive currencies despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict. Meanwhile, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July meeting showed that policymakers remained concerned about persistent inflation, with several officials open to further interest-rate hikes. This could provide some support for the greenback and limit the kiwi's upside. Still, the kiwi remains supported by expectations of another rate hike from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in September. The currency is up more than 1% this week.

New Zealand Dollar Retreats
The New Zealand dollar fell to around $0.587, retreating from a two-and-a-half-month high, amid a risk-averse mood due to Middle East tensions and a broad selloff in equities. The memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran in June has expired without an extension as talks between the two sides faltered. New Zealand’s heavy reliance on imported oil also leaves the currency exposed to supply disruptions and higher energy costs. Sentiment was further dampened by another decline in AI and chip stocks amid elevated bond yields. Still, downside pressure on the New Zealand dollar was partly cushioned by expectations that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will deliver another 25-basis-point rate hike next month, following repeated signals that monetary policy needs to become less accommodative. However, a string of weak economic data has raised doubts about how much further the RBNZ can tighten policy.
