European stocks fell on Tuesday, with the STOXX 50 declining 0.7% to trade at low levels not seen in about four months and the STOXX 600 losing 0.4%, extending the previous session’s losses of nearly 1%.

Sentiment remained subdued amid renewed pressure on AI-related stocks and concerns over elevated valuations in the sector.

Rising oil prices and continued concerns over political unrest and instability in France also weighed on European markets.

Among individual stocks, ASML Holding dropped 2.8%, while Siemens fell 3.0%.

Schneider Electric declined 3.6%, Safran lost 1.3%, and Siemens Energy slipped 2.5%.

ABB tumbled 4.5% despite reporting third-quarter results broadly in line with market expectations.

On the other hand, Novartis (0.6%), SAP (0.9%), Sanofi (1.6%) booked gains.

European Stocks Poised to Open Lower
European equity markets were set to open lower on Tuesday, extending the previous session’s losses as renewed selling in global technology and artificial intelligence stocks dampened investor sentiment. Rising oil prices further heightened concerns over inflation and the outlook for interest rates. Meanwhile, investors continued to monitor geopolitical risks across Europe as governments worked to contain widespread unrest over inadequate public services and the rising cost of living, which turned violent over the weekend. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde also warned that rising bond yields, driven by concerns over government debt, could weigh on economic growth and inflation. In premarket trading, Euro Stoxx 50 futures fell 0.7%, while Stoxx 600 futures declined 0.5%.

European Stocks Pull Back
European stocks closed sharply lower on Monday as fresh civil unrest added to local political uncertainty, triggering selloffs in the bond markets of major Eurozone members. The Euro STOXX 50 fell 1% to 6,141 and the STOXX Europe 600 lost 0.9% to 639. Protests across France and Italy against rising living costs escalated into clashes with local security forces, pressuring the outlook for the countries' respective budgets to pass smoothly ahead of their elections next year, at a time where rising yields across the Eurozone had already triggered concerns of contagion in the bloc's sovereign bond market. Banks therefore led the losses, with Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, Santander, UniCredit, and Intesa Sanpaolo dropping over 2%. Industrials were also down, with Airbus and Rheinmetall dropping close to 3%. Meanwhile, Hermès and SAP were relatively close to the flatline ahead of their earnings this week.
