European Stocks Lack Direction

2026-08-12 07:46 By Joana Taborda 1 min. read

Both the STOXX 50 and STOXX 600 hovered around the flatline near record levels on Wednesday, as traders refrained from making major bets ahead of the US CPI report, which is expected to provide fresh clues on price pressures and help shape expectations for the Fed's next steps.

Rising oil prices also kept sentiment cautious.

Meanwhile, the earnings season is drawing to a close, although several companies continued to report results.

ABN AMRO surged more than 5% after beating market expectations across the board, while Vestas jumped more than 18% after reporting higher revenue.

The tech sector was among the top performers, benefiting from a broader global tech rally after CoreWeave reported better-than-expected sales growth.

ASML Holding rose 2%, Infineon Technologies gained 1.6%, Siemens Energy advanced 3.5%, and Rheinmetall climbed 1.3%.

Luxury stocks, meanwhile, came under pressure, with LVMH falling 1.8%, Hermes declining 1.5%, and Kering dropping 2.9%.

European Stocks Set for Flat Open
European equity markets were poised for a subdued open on Wednesday as investors remained cautious amid elevated oil prices and looked ahead to a key US inflation reading. Markets remained doubtful that an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached, despite assurances from Pakistan’s defense minister that Washington and Tehran are moving closer to a deal. In Europe, investors will review final July inflation figures for Germany and Italy, alongside earnings from major companies including E.ON, Hannover Ruck, M&G and Brenntag, among others. Meanwhile, Dutch lender ABN Amro delivered better-than-expected quarterly earnings as increased fee income and stronger lending revenue boosted results, prompting the bank to upgrade its forecast for its largest source of revenue. In premarket trading, Euro Stoxx 50 and Stoxx 600 futures were little changed to slightly lower.

European Stocks Extend Records
European stocks inched higher to new records on Tuesday as gains for technology and energy stocks offset a muted session elsewhere. The Euro STOXX 50 closed 0.5% higher at a record of 6,553 and the STOXX Europe 600 inched higher to a record of 660.8. ASML jumped 2.7%, supported by a recommendation upgrade by Bernstein. Other companies with exposure to AI infrastructure also rose, with Siemens Energy gaining close to 3%. In turn, energy stocks rose after US President Trump hardened his rhetoric against Iran, prolonging expectations of suspended exports through the Persian Gulf despite optimistic signals of a deal from Pakistan and Qatar. TotalEnergies and ENI advanced nearly 2%.
