The euro weakened toward $1.18 as investors weighed a report that Christine Lagarde may step down early as president of the European Central Bank.
According to the Financial Times, Lagarde is considering leaving before France’s 2027 presidential election, though no timetable has been set.
If she departs early, French President Emmanuel Macron, ineligible for a third term, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz could play pivotal roles in deciding her successor.
Earlier this month, reports also indicated that François Villeroy de Galhau, governor of the Bank of France and widely seen as a dovish policymaker, will step down in June, well before his term was due to end in October 2027.
With euro area inflation broadly under control, the ECB is expected to keep interest rates steady for the remainder of the year.
At its February meeting, Lagarde said the bloc’s inflation outlook was in a “good place,” while warning against overreacting to short-term or volatile data.
