South Africa Mining Activity Surprises on the Upside

Mining production in South Africa rose by 1.2% over a year ago in September 2025, following a revision of August’s data to show no change and better than analysts' estimates of a 0.4% fall.
The main positive contributors were PGMs (+3.8%, +1.1 points), gold (+5.9%, +0.6 points), and coal (+1.5%, +0.4 points).
On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, mining output advanced 2.2%, the most since May, after a revised 0.9% decrease in the prior month.
Mining production increased by 2.5% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the second quarter of 2025.
