South Africa Mining Output Picks Up Pace in June

Mining production in South Africa rose by 2.4% over a year ago in June 2025, accelerating from an upwardly revised 0.3% increase in May and marking the second consecutive month of growth.

Figures exceeded market estimates of a 1.4% advance.

The largest positive contributors were PGMs, which rose 3.0% and contributed 1.0 percentage point; coal, up 3.7% and contributing 0.8 percentage point; and chromium ore, which increased by 9.0%, adding 0.5 percentage point to overall growth.

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, mining output went up by 0.2%, after an upwardly revised 3.9% surge in the month before.

Mining production grew by 3.9% in the second quarter of 2025 compared with the first quarter of 2025.
