The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for South Africa fell to 43.1 in May 2025 from 44.7 in April, marking the seventh consecutive month of contraction in factory activity and the sharpest decline since April 2020.
Absa noted that trade disruptions with neighboring countries, policy uncertainty, tariffs, and ongoing logistical challenges continue to weigh on the sector.
The business activity index rose by 3.4 points to 43.4, suggesting a mild improvement in demand, though activity remains historically low.
New sales orders also edged up, gaining 2.2 points to 38.3.
In contrast, the inventories index slipped to 44.7 from 47.8, while the employment index declined further, extending its contractionary streak to 14 months.
On a positive note, the index tracking expected business conditions in six months jumped 13.9 points to 62.5, the highest reading since late 2024.
