Domestically, there are concerns that a prolonged Middle East conflict and higher oil prices could push inflation higher, as South Africa is a net importer of oil. Annual inflation cooled to 3% in February, aligning with the central bank’s target, yet surging fuel costs are expected to exert upward pressure in March and subsequent months. South Africa’s central bank kept interest rates unchanged in March as escalating tensions in the Middle East inject fresh uncertainty into the inflation and growth outlook. It also signaled that future hikes could be implemented if conditions warrant.

Policymakers now expect a single rate reduction for the year, down from two, as they remain cautious amid global uncertainties. They also examined two Iran conflict scenarios — a short two-month case and a prolonged one-year case — both pointing toward higher interest rates.
