The South African rand eased to near 17 per USD, after hitting an over one-week high of 16.8 per USD on April 1st, as increased risk aversion prompted investors to the safety of the US dollar while precious metals prices fell.

The central bank held its benchmark policy rate steady at 6.75%, citing inflation risks from higher energy costs and indicating that borrowing costs are likely to stay elevated for an extended period.
Inflation is set to accelerate in March and the months to come due to the impact of the war.
