New Zealand New Dwelling Consents Rise in January

The number of building consents issued for new dwellings in New Zealand rose by 2.6% month-on-month reaching a seasonally adjusted total of 2,768 units in January 2025.

Over the year to January 2025, the total number of new dwellings consented was 33,812, reflecting a 7.2% decrease compared to the previous year.

The annual value of non-residential building work consented was $8.9 billion, a 9.7% decline from the year to January 2024.

Looking at unadjusted data, 2,203 new dwellings were consented in January 2025, including 1,077 stand-alone houses, 968 townhouses, flats, and units, 90 retirement village units, and 68 apartments.

Building consents for new dwellings in New Zealand rose 2.7% month-on-month in February 2026, after rising 2.0% in January. A total of 3,168 new dwellings were consented, including 1,532 stand-alone houses, 1,305 townhouses, flats, and units, 141 apartments, and 190 retirement village units. In the year ended February 2026, New Zealand saw 7.1 new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents, up from 6.3 per 1,000 in the year ended February 2025.

Building consents for new dwellings in New Zealand rose 1.9% month-on-month in January 2026, reversing a 4.5% fall in December. A total of 2,528 new dwellings were consented, including 1,190 stand-alone houses, 1,004 townhouses, flats, and units, 145 apartments, and 189 retirement village units. In the year ended January 2026, New Zealand saw 6.9 new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents, up from 6.4 per 1,000 in the year ended January 2025.

Building consents for new dwellings in New Zealand fell 4.6% month-on-month in December 2025, reversing an upwardly revised 2.7% rise in November. A total of 3,128 new dwellings were consented, including 1,299 stand-alone houses, 1,494 townhouses, flats, and units, 72 apartments, and 263 retirement village units. In the year ended December 2025, New Zealand saw 6.9 new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents, up from 6.4 per 1,000 in the year ended December 2024.
