Canada Weekly Earnings Growth Slows in May

Average weekly earnings of Canadian non-farm payroll employees rose 3.4% year-on-year to C$1,337.77 in May 2026, easing from a 3.8% increase in April and marking the slowest growth since February.

The strongest wage gains were recorded in management of companies and enterprises (10%), utilities (9.2%), information and cultural industries (8.3%), retail trade (8.1%), and transportation and warehousing (7.1%).

In contrast, earnings declined in real estate and rental and leasing (-1.8%) and construction (-0.1%).

By province, Nunavut posted the largest increase (6.6%), followed by Nova Scotia (5.3%), Manitoba (4.8%), British Columbia (4.6%), and Prince Edward Island (4.5%), while Newfoundland and Labrador recorded a 1.3% decline.

On a monthly basis, average weekly earnings fell 0.4%.

Meanwhile, average weekly hours worked were unchanged at 33.4 hours.

The strongest gains were recorded in utilities (11.2%), information and cultural industries (10.1%), finance and insurance (8.2%), retail trade (7.2%), and professional, scientific and technical services (6.7%). In contrast, earnings declined in real estate and rental and leasing (-3.9%). By province, the largest increases were seen in Nunavut (8.1%), New Brunswick (6.7%), Manitoba (6.2%), and Nova Scotia (5.9%). On a month-over-month basis, average weekly earnings rose 1.0%. Meanwhile, average weekly hours worked were little changed at 33.5 hours, both from the previous month and a year earlier.

Average weekly earnings of Canadian non-farm payroll employees rose 3.5% year-on-year to C$1,333 in March 2026, accelerating from a 2.8% increase in February. The strongest gains were recorded in utilities (9%), information and cultural industries (7%), and transportation and warehousing (6.2%). In contrast, earnings declined in forestry, logging and support activities (-2.4%), management of companies and enterprises (-0.8%), and real estate and rental and leasing (-9.2%). By province, the largest increases were seen in Nunavut (7.8%), Prince Edward Island (7.7%), and New Brunswick (6.7%). Meanwhile, average weekly hours worked stood at 33.4 hours, little changed from the previous month and down 0.3% from a year earlier.
