Canada Weekly Earnings Rise the Most Since 2021

Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees in Canada rose by 5.8% year-on-year to $1,290.82 in December 2024, the most since March 2021, following a 5.0% year-over-year increase in November, with 17 of the 20 sectors reporting gains.

The largest increases were recorded in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (+9.8% to $2,472); information and cultural industries (+9.4% to $1,828); educational services (+6.5% to $1,271) and health care and social assistance (+5.6% to $1,138).

Conversely, earnings decreased in utilities (-2.3% to $2,069); forestry, logging and support (-0.4% to $1,411) and construction (-0.1% to $1,504).

Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees in Canada rose by 1.9% year-on-year to C$1,316 in December 2025, following a downwardly revised 2.3% advance in the prior month. The biggest gains were recorded in real estate and rental and leasing (7.7% to C$1,402); transportation and warehousing (6.2% to C$1,395); utilities (5% to C$2,037) and forestry, logging and support (4.7% to C$1,512). By contrast, the largest declines were seen in finance and insurance (-5.7% to C$1,806) and wholesale trade (-3.8% to C$1,490). By province, Prince Edward Island (8.4%) and Manitoba (4.5%) posted the largest increases, while Northwest Territories recorded a 4% decline. On a monthly basis, average weekly earnings were little unchanged in December.

Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees in Canada rose 2.5% year-on-year to C$1,317 in November 2025, picking up from a 2.0% increase in October. The strongest gains were recorded in forestry, logging and support activities (9.4%), real estate and rental and leasing (8.0%), and management of companies and enterprises (6.4%). In contrast, earnings fell in wholesale trade (-5.9%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (-5.2%). By province, Prince Edward Island posted the largest increase (5.6%), while the Northwest Territories saw the steepest decline (-12.5%). On a month-on-month basis, average weekly earnings were broadly unchanged in November.

Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees in Canada increased 2.2% year-on-year to C$1,312 in October 2025, easing from a 2.9% rise in September. The strongest earnings gains were recorded in forestry, logging and support activities (+7.6% to C$1,545.59), real estate and rental and leasing (+7.4% to C$1,374.15), and administrative and support, waste management and remediation services (+7.0% to C$1,114.57). By contrast, earnings declined in wholesale trade (-4.9% to C$1,486.34), arts, entertainment and recreation (-2.4% to C$744.54), and finance and insurance (-0.9% to C$1,773.63). On a month-on-month basis, average weekly earnings were broadly unchanged in October.
