Canada’s 10-year government bond yield edged higher to around 3.85% in October as expectations for Bank of Canada policy shifted toward tighter monetary conditions.

Markets anticipate a more hawkish tone at the BoC’s next policy decision, scheduled for October 28.

Governor Tiff Macklem recently said the central bank expects to significantly raise its quarterly inflation forecast this month, following hawkish remarks last week about energy-driven price pressures.

Rising oil prices have added to upward pressure on energy costs amid the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Canadian retail sales are expected to have increased 0.7% month over month in September, extending a 1.2% gain in August, according to preliminary estimates.

Stronger retail activity could add to inflation concerns and reinforce expectations for a tighter monetary policy stance.

Canada’s 10-Year Yield Rises on Hawkish BoC Bets
Canada’s 10-year government bond yield rose to around 3.90% in October, its highest level in nearly two weeks, following the release of September inflation data. The annual inflation rate climbed to 3.1%, its highest level in four months, driven by higher gasoline prices, but came in below market expectations of 3.2%. While rising energy prices pushed headline inflation higher, underlying measures remained subdued, with CPI-median slowing to 1.9% and CPI-trim easing to 1.8% in September. Despite the downside surprise, the outlook for Bank of Canada policy remained tilted toward tighter conditions, as policymakers flagged upside risks to inflation. Governor Tiff Macklem said on Saturday that the central bank expects to raise its quarterly inflation forecast significantly this month, following hawkish remarks last week about energy-driven price pressures.

Canada 10-Year Yield Hits Five-Week Low
Canada’s 10-year government bond yield fell to around 3.80% in October, its lowest level in five weeks, tracking a decline in global yields as a selloff in technology and AI stocks drove investors toward safe-haven government bonds. Concerns about the sustainability of AI spending in a high-interest-rate environment fueled a broader flight to safety. However, strong Canadian manufacturing sales boosted expectations of a Bank of Canada rate hike at its next meeting. Canadian manufacturing sales rose 1.5% month-over-month to C$79.9 billion in August 2026, beating expectations for a 1.1% increase and marking the sharpest rise since April. The upbeat data contrasted with recent signs of a cooling economy. Employment fell by 68,300, far below expectations for a 7,000 increase, pointing to a weaker start to the third quarter.
