French Stocks Edge Higher
The CAC 40 edged 0.1% higher to close at 8,318 on Tuesday, supported by gains in industrial and energy stocks. France’s exports rose 0.3% month over month to €54.7 billion in July, led by natural hydrocarbons, other extractive products and industrial goods. Airbus gained 1%, Thales 0.5%, Air Liquide 1.4%, Schneider Electric 1.4%, Legrand 1.1% and EssilorLuxottica 0.7%. TotalEnergies rose 0.6% as oil prices climbed amid escalating Middle East tensions. Financials, however, declined after eurozone inflation accelerated to 3.3% in August, its highest level in nearly three years and above the ECB’s 2% target, boosting expectations of a 25-bp rate hike. BNP Paribas fell 0.6%, AXA 1.1%, while Crédit Agricole and Société Générale lost 1% each. Luxury stocks were mixed, with LVMH down 1.1% and Hermès 2.2%, while L’Oréal gained 0.9% and Kering 1.2%. STMicroelectronics fell 3.5%, tracking losses among US hyperscalers.

French Stocks at 2-Month Low
The CAC 40 fell 0.4% to 8,270 on Tuesday, reversing the previous session’s gains and hitting its lowest level since July, as investors weighed rising oil prices and inflation pressures amid escalating Middle East tensions. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran and Oman were in the final stages of an agreement to establish a safe maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz, though disruptions to oil shipments continued to fuel supply concerns. The European Central Bank now expects to raise borrowing costs by 25 bps, especially after eurozone inflation accelerated to 3.3% in August, its highest level in nearly three years and well above the ECB’s 2% target. Banking stocks came under pressure, particularly BNP Paribas (-1%), Crédit Agricole (-0.8%) and Société Générale (-2.4%). Other notable laggards included Hermès (-1.3%), STMicroelectronics (-1.6%) and Airbus (-0.9%).
