Industrial production in France fell 0.5% month-on-month in September 2026, following a 0.4% decline in August, defying expectations of a 0.3% rebound.

The decline was mainly driven by a 3.8% drop in extractive industries, energy and water, following a 2.8% decrease in August, largely reflecting lower electricity production.

In contrast, manufacturing output rose 0.5%, accelerating from a 0.3% increase in the previous month.

Within manufacturing, transport equipment output rebounded 2.7%, supported by a 7.5% increase in automobile production.

Output of electrical, electronic and computer equipment also rose 2.6%, while agri-food production increased 1.0% and coking and refining output advanced 6.0%.

On the other hand, production of other industrial products fell 0.7%.

On a yearly basis, activity dropped 1.3%, the most since April 2025, and following a 0.2% gain in August.

Over the third quarter, industrial output declined 0.6% from a year earlier.

France Industrial Output Surprisingly Falls
Industrial production in France fell 0.3% month-on-month in August 2026, defying expectations for a 0.3% rise and following a 0.6% decline in July. The drop was mainly driven by a 2.4% decline in extractive industries, energy and water, following a 0.2% increase in July, largely due to lower electricity production after output reached its highest level since December 2021 in the previous month. This more than offset a 0.3% increase in manufacturing, which rebounded from a 0.8% decline previously. Within the sector, output of other industrial products rose 1.2%, while electrical, electronic and computer equipment increased 0.9%. Coking and refining output also rose 3.3%. In contrast, transport equipment manufacturing fell 2.2%, while agri-food production dropped 1.2%. On a yearly basis, industrial output rose 0.3%, rebounding from a 0.6% fall in July. Over the three months to August, industrial production was down 0.1% from a year earlier.

Transport equipment manufacturing led the declines, falling 2.8% after a 3.8% drop in June, while output of other industrial products decreased 0.5% for a second month. Production of electrical, electronic, and computer equipment fell 0.8%, reversing a 0.2% increase, while food processing output was broadly stable at -0.1%. In contrast, production in extractive industries, energy, and water rose 0.9%, slowing from 3.2%, driven by stronger electricity production and consumption during the second heat wave.
