Industrial production in France fell 0.3% month-on-month in August 2026, defying expectations for a 0.3% rise and following a 0.6% decline in July.
The drop was mainly driven by a 2.4% decline in extractive industries, energy and water, following a 0.2% increase in July, largely due to lower electricity production after output reached its highest level since December 2021 in the previous month.
This more than offset a 0.3% increase in manufacturing, which rebounded from a 0.8% decline previously.
Within the sector, output of other industrial products rose 1.2%, while electrical, electronic and computer equipment increased 0.9%.
Coking and refining output also rose 3.3%.
In contrast, transport equipment manufacturing fell 2.2%, while agri-food production dropped 1.2%.
On a yearly basis, industrial output rose 0.3%, rebounding from a 0.6% fall in July.
Over the three months to August, industrial production was down 0.1% from a year earlier.
