France Industrial Output Rebounds in June

Industrial production in France fell 0.4% month-on-month in July 2026, missing market expectations for a 0.3% rebound after a revised 0.1% decline in June. Manufacturing output dropped 0.8% after falling 1% in the previous period, as production declined across almost all major sectors. Transport equipment manufacturing led the declines, falling 2.8% after a 3.8% drop in June, while output of other industrial products decreased 0.5% for a second month. Production of electrical, electronic, and computer equipment fell 0.8%, reversing a 0.2% increase, while food processing output was broadly stable at -0.1%. In contrast, production in extractive industries, energy, and water rose 0.9%, slowing from 3.2%, driven by stronger electricity production and consumption during the second heat wave. On a yearly basis, industrial production fell 0.5%, following a 0.1% decline in June, while production increased 0.8% in the three months to July.

Output growth accelerated in extractive industries, energy, and water (3.8% vs 2.9% in May), supported by stronger gains in electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply (4.2% vs 3.1%) and water and sanitation (1.5% vs 1.1%). Meanwhile, manufacturing output fell at a faster pace (-1.1% vs -1%), largely due to deeper declines in agri-food industries (-0.8% vs -0.3%), coke and refined petroleum products (-12% vs -11.7%), transport equipment manufacturing (-3.8% vs -2.1%), and the manufacture of other industrial products (-0.6% vs -0.4%). On a yearly basis, industrial production fell 0.1%, reversing a 3.1% rise in the previous month and marking its first annual decline since February.

Industrial production in France fell by 0.1% month-on-month in May 2026, beating market expectations of a 0.4% decline, following a 0.3% increase in the previous month. Production contracted more sharply in manufacturing (-1.0% vs. -0.4% in April), weighed down by declines in the manufacture of transport equipment (-2.8% vs. 3.3%) and coke and refined petroleum products (-9.0% vs. 0.6%), while the contraction in machinery and equipment production deepened (-2.3% vs. -0.4%). Additionally, activity declined in mining and quarrying (-0.6% vs. 2.2%), while growth in water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation services eased (0.9% vs. 1.0%). In contrast, output rebounded sharply in electricity, gas, steam, and air-conditioning supply (3.4% vs. -1.1%). On an annual basis, industrial production rose 3.2% in May, following an upwardly revised 2.9% increase in the previous month.
