The S&P TSX Composite plunged 2.4% to close at 32,465 on Thursday, retreating sharply from record territory as heavy losses in technology and materials overwhelmed strength in defensives.
Shopify sank around 6.2%, Constellation Software fell 1%, and Celestica dropped 7%, dragging the information technology sector sharply lower.
Materials also slumped, with Barrick losing 4.6%, Agnico Eagle down 5.1%, Wheaton sliding 6.3%, and several gold and silver names shedding over 5% amid a broad metals selloff.
Energy was weaker as Canadian Natural fell 1.3% and Cenovus lost 2.9%, tracking lower crude prices.
Financials offered limited relief, with Royal Bank down 1.8% and TD off 1.4%, although Sun Life surged 6.3% after earnings while Manulife slid 5.3% on softer profit.
