Canadian industries operated at 81.4% of their production capacity in the second quarter of 2023, slightly down from the downwardly revised 81.8% in the prior period.
It was the lowest capacity utilization rate since the last quarter of 2021, amid declines in construction (88.5% vs 89.7% in Q1) and mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (79.5% vs 80%).
Meanwhile, the capacity utilization rate in the manufacturing sector edged up 0.2 percentage points to 78.0% in the second quarter.
The increase was mainly attributable to the strength of the transportation equipment manufacturing subsector, the rate of which rose 4.2 percentage points to 85.4% in the second quarter, reflecting improvements to earlier supply chain challenges.
