Australian shares rose 33 points or 0.4% to 9,039 on Monday morning deals, reversing weakness in the prior session amid solid gains in non-energy minerals, energy minerals, tech, and logistics.

Sentiment improved as Asia-Pacific markets traded broadly higher amid signs that the Trump administration could seek to eliminate Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon even without securing a formal agreement with Tehran.

Locally, August services growth was revised higher amid improving confidence that came close to its level before the outbreak of war in the Middle East.

However, gains were capped by caution ahead of key data due later this week in top trading partner China, notably August CPI and PPI, as well as trade performance.

Meanwhile, Wall Street will be closed today for a holiday.

Among early movers was mining giant BHP Group, which jumped 1.9%.

Three of four big banks rose modestly, while Reece Ltd (2.3%), Bluescope Steel (2.0%), and Lynas Rare Earths (0.8%) also advanced.

ASX 200 Closes Muted
The ASX 200 finished little changed at 9,011 on Monday, as gains in non-energy minerals, energy names, and logistics offset declines in tech, commercial services, and healthcare. Early strength faded after U.S. stock futures slumped on renewed Middle East tensions, with tit-for-tat strikes between Washington and Tehran targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and other areas over the weekend. Meanwhile, Wall Street was shut Monday for a holiday. Locally, job ads rose for a second month in August, boosted by seasonal hiring ahead of Christmas. In main trading partner China, key data releases loom this week, including August CPI, PPI, and trade figures. Energy stocks outperformed, with Woodside up 1.6% and Santos 1.7%. Ingenia Communities surged nearly 15% after rejecting a takeover bid from Warburg Pincus that valued the developer at a 30% premium. Tech lagged, led by Xero (-3.9%) and Wisetech (-3.8%), while two of the big four banks were subdued.

ASX 200 Slides Near 1% for Week
The ASX 200 slipped 14 points, or 0.2%, to finish at 9,006 on Friday, reversing modest gains in early deals and ending the week down almost 1%, as stronger-than-expected Australia's GDP readings in Q2 revived fears of another rate hike by the Reserve Bank later this month. Sentiment also turned cautious ahead of key data due next week in top trading partner China, notably August CPI and PPI, as well as trade performance. Meanwhile, traders were on edge as the U.S. payrolls report looms large. Losses in energy minerals, utilities, and industrials weighed, though strength in non-energy miners, tech, and healthcare helped limit declines. Energy names lagged, with Ampol tumbling 5.5% while Woodside (-1.4%) and Santos (-0.7%) also fell. Heavyweight BHP Group (-2.2%), Computershare (-2.9%), PLS (-2.3%), and Xero (-1.7%) also retreated. In contrast, financials provided support, with the big four banks posting modest gains, while select tech stocks advanced.
