Australia Exports Fall 3.3%

Australia’s goods exports grew 9.6% month-on-month to an over-three-year high of AUD 47.70 billion in June, rebounding from an upwardly revised 7.6% decline in May. The increase was primarily driven by non-monetary gold amid higher global energy and commodity prices, reflecting the impact of the Middle East conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Non-monetary gold exports surged 60.2%, after plunging in the previous month, to AUD 7.24 billion. Non-rural goods shipments rose 4.9% month-on-month to AUD 34.08 billion, mainly due to higher exports of metal ores and minerals, which increased 6.2%. The advance was also supported by coal, coke and briquettes (4.6%), other mineral fuels (4.0%), metals (20.2%), machinery (3.3%), and other manufactures (2.8%). Conversely, rural exports dropped 1.9% month-on-month to AUD 6.30 billion, weighed down by lower exports of meat and meat preparations (-5.9%) and cereal grains and cereal preparations (-5.1%).

Australia’s goods exports dropped 6.9% month-on-month to a four-month low of AUD 43.61 billion in May, reversing a 7.2% rise in April, primarily weighed down by non-monetary gold and metal ores and minerals. Non-monetary gold exports continued to decline, plunging 35.0% to AUD 4.52 billion. Non-rural goods shipments fell 2.9% month-on-month to AUD 32.37 billion, mainly due to lower exports of metal ores and minerals, which declined 9.0%. The decline was also weighed down by metals (-9.3%) and transport equipment (-5.5%). By contrast, rural exports rose 2.6% month-on-month to AUD 6.65 billion, supported by increases in meat and meat preparations (5.4%), other rural goods (3.1%), and wool and sheepskins (2.3%), while cereal grains and cereal preparations fell 4.2%.

Australia’s goods exports grew 7.2% mom to a three-year high of AUD 47.19 billion in April 2026, after a downwardly revised 2.5% fall in March, primarily reflecting a sharp increase in metal ore and mineral prices amid supply concerns and rising energy costs. Non-rural goods shipments rose 11% mom to AUD 33.57 billion, mainly driven by a surge in metal ores and minerals, which soared 18.5% amid rising prices. The growth was also boosted by higher sales of coal, coke, and briquettes (15.2%), other mineral fuels (2.0%), metals (5.4%), and other manufacturers (8.8%). Meanwhile, rural exports climbed 4.4% to AUD 6.58 billion, supported by increases in meat and meat preparations (0.9%), other rural goods (9.5%), cereal grains and cereal preparations (2.3%), and wool and sheepskins (7.3%). By contrast, non-monetary gold exports continued to decline, falling 6.1% to AUD 6.96 billion amid fluctuating global gold prices during the month, following a more than 10% drop in gold prices in March.
