The FTSE MIB rose to around 50,700 on Monday, extending its rebound from the previous session after briefly hitting its lowest level since June.

This comes as oil prices eased, offering some relief, while markets continued to assess broader fiscal and political uncertainty across the region.

On the economic data front, fresh PMI surveys showed Italy’s services sector expanded at its weakest pace in three months in September and below expectations, while private sector activity also grew at the slowest pace since June.

Across the bourse, Unipol rose 4.6%, while Bper Banca gained 2.0%, Tenaris advanced 1.3% and Intesa Sanpaolo added 1.1%.

Meanwhile, Mediobanca plunged 7.6% after Intesa Sanpaolo sweetened its offer for Monte dei Paschi di Siena, with MPS’s largest shareholder Delfin backing the revised bid.

Telecom Italia fell also 0.8%, while Prysmian and Snam declined 1.0% and 0.8%, respectively.

FTSE MIB Inches Higher
The FTSE MIB rose 0.5% to 50,483 on Friday, as losses in financial and defense stocks offset gains on chip-related and utilities stocks. STMicroelectronics (6.7%), Technoprobe (6%) and Prysmian (4%) led the gains, tracking a broader rally across the sector after a weaker-than-expected US jobs report reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month and renewed investor appetite for riskier assets. Luxury stocks also advanced, with Brunello Cucinelli rising 1.5%, while utilities gained, led by Enel (1.5%). Eni rose 0.7% after extending its 20% discount on diesel and gasoline through the end of October. Financials underperformed as elevated energy prices pushed Eurozone inflation to its highest level in three years, supporting bets of a ECB hike by year-end, while the BTP to safe-haven Bund spread rose by 115bps. Unipol led losses at 1.1%. Defense stocks also declined amid expectations that Italy will reduce defense spending. Fincantieri fell 2%, while Leonardo lost 0.9%.
