FTSE MIB Flat at Start of Week

2026-09-07 07:50 By Kyrie Dichosa 1 min. read

The FTSE MIB was flat to slightly lower around 52,000 on Monday as investors tracked Middle East developments.

The US and Iran continued to exchange strikes, with Tehran threatening to establish a new restricted zone outside the Strait of Hormuz.

Attention also turned to the ECB's expected rate hike later this week as the conflict keeps oil prices elevated and fuels inflation concerns.

Among laggards, Telecom Italia (-1.1%), Enel (-0.8%) and Poste Italiane (-0.9%) traded lower.

In contrast, Eni climbed 1.5% as crude oil prices rose, while Tenaris and Saipem each added 1.7%.

Technology shares also outperformed, with STMicroelectronics (+2.3%) and Prysmian (+1.9%) tracking a global tech rally.

Financial stocks were little changed after Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti reiterated the government's neutral stance on the M&A battle for MPS, saying the Treasury would retain its 4.9% stake until the process concludes.

FTSE MIB Edges Lower
The FTSE MIB declined 0.3% to 52,100 on Friday, weighed down by financials following US labor data that came in well above expectations. The figures pointed to a resilient labor market, prompting traders to raise expectations for a Fed rate hike at its September meeting. At the same time, the ECB is also expected to raise rates at next week’s meeting, which could weigh on credit demand for lenders. UniCredit fell 1.2% as the bank moved closer to taking control of Commerzbank and is set to meet with the German finance minister. Meanwhile, the ECB approved MPS’s (0.3%) merger with Mediobanca. Energy shares also traded lower. On the upside, Stellantis gained 1.8% after a coalition of major US automakers urged lawmakers to permanently ban Chinese vehicles from the US. STMicroelectronics and Prysmian added 1.9% and 2.1%, respectively, while utilities also outperformed, led by A2A (1.7%).
