FTSE MIB Starts the Week Lower

The FTSE MIB edged lower to around 52,500 on Monday, hovering close to a three-week low, tracking declines across regional peers as the market turned cautious ahead of a busy week.

Investors will also be watching US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s press conference later today for updates on Iran sanctions, while Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at Jackson Hole on Friday could offer further insight into the path for interest rates.

On the domestic front, Italy’s government extended its diesel tax cut through Wednesday, keeping a €0.17-per-liter reduction at the pump in place as it seeks to cushion consumers from higher oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict.

On the bourse, financials were mostly lower as merger activity remained in focus, with MPS down 1.3%, Mediobanca 1.8%, and Intesa Sanpaolo 0.7%.

Other notable laggards included Eni (-1.7%), Stellantis (-3.1%), Leonardo (-1.9%), and Terna (-2.4%).

The FTSE MIB Index decreased 126 points or 0.24 percent on Monday to close at 52542 points. The decline was led by Prysmian (-4.76%), Avio (-4.73%) and Stellantis N.V. (-4.50%). On the upside, the strongest performers were Nexi (4.68%), Moncler (2.10%) and Infrastrutture Wire (1.78%).

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to outline details of the latest US pressure campaign against Iran, while the US President has threatened sanctions on Iran’s trading partners. Meanwhile, six EU countries proposed discussions in September on a mechanism to tax oil companies’ windfall profits, weighing on Eni (-2.5%). The collapse of the US-Canada trade deal also pressured Stellantis (-4.8%), after Washington pledged to double tariffs on Canadian vehicles and parts from January 2027. Prysmian (-5.2%) and STMicroelectronics (-2%) fell ahead of Nvidia’s earnings. Banks mostly advanced, with MPS's (0.4%) bid remaining in focus, while Banco BPM (-2.3%) declined ahead of a meeting tomorrow to discuss MPS’s offer. Utilities also outperformed, led by A2A (0.8%), while TotalEnergies is considering projects in Norway that could potentially increase Europe's natural gas supply.
