The FTSE MIB Index Closes 0.17% Lower

The FTSE MIB Index fell 94 points or 0.17 percent on Wednesday to close at 53447 points. Leading the losses are Fincantieri (-2.27%), Infrastrutture Wire (-2.24%) and STMicroelectronics (-2.09%). Top gainers were Lottomatica (3.79%), Unipol Gruppo (1.72%) and Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (1.64%).

The FTSE MIB edged 0.2% lower to 53,447 on Wednesday, as losses in auto and technology stocks outweighed gains in the luxury sector. Stellantis declined 1.8% after reporting earnings below analysts' expectations. STMicroelectronics fell 1.6% as chipmakers remained under pressure amid growing doubts over AI-related investment, while Prysmian lost 1.2%. Financials were mixed as investors assessed optimism surrounding a potential US-Iran agreement. UniCredit slipped 0.7%, while Mediobanca gained 1.5%. BMPS gained 1.6% after reports the Italian government would maintain a neutral stance on banking consolidation, fuelling expectations Rome could sell its MPS stake before Intesa Sanpaolo's (-0.3%) bid takes effect. Brunello Cucinelli led gains, rising 1.8%, as luxury stocks advanced after Chanel reported resilient revenue despite the broader industry slowdown. Campari rose 1.3% and Ferrari added 1.2%.

The FTSE MIB climbed to around 53,700 on Wednesday, hitting a fresh record high, as optimism over diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran boosted investor sentiment. President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran were progressing well and that more clarity could emerge within 48 hours, while Qatar announced that a proposal addressing the Strait of Hormuz had been drafted. Despite signs of easing geopolitical tensions, defense stocks outperformed, with Leonardo and Avio rising more than 2% and 4%, respectively. Automakers also advanced, with Stellantis gaining about 1.5% and Ferrari nearly 1%. Banco BPM edged higher ahead of its scheduled Q2 earnings release. Meanwhile, the latest PMI survey showed Italy's private sector expanded at its fastest pace since November 2025, with services activity also exceeding expectations.
