The FTSE MIB jumped 2.3% to close at 49,697 on Wednesday, reaching a fresh record high as oil prices continued to ease on renewed hopes for a peace deal in the Iran conflict.
The US said its offensive military actions against Iran had been completed, while President Donald Trump indicated Washington would temporarily suspend efforts to assist vessels leaving the Strait of Hormuz to allow room for renewed negotiations.
Financials led the rally, with UniCredit (+4.6%), Intesa Sanpaolo (+3.3%), Banco BPM (+3.9%), and BPER Banca (+3.7%) posting strong gains, while Generali rose 2.2% ahead of earnings.
Leonardo (+5.0%) is also set to report results, alongside TIM (+1.6%) and Poste Italiane (+2.3%).
Eni fell 4.1% on lower oil prices.
On the data front, PMI surveys showed Italy’s private sector returned to growth in April, although the services sector remained in contraction.
