Italy’s 10-year BTP yield held near 4.49%, hovering near its highest level in three years, tracking higher US Treasury yields ahead of Tuesday’s US midterm elections.
Additionally, concerns over Europe’s fiscal outlook persist, as rising living costs and energy prices fuel inflationary and budgetary pressures, prompting protests across the continent.
Italy approved its 2027 budget last week, with the deficit seen rising to 3.4% of GDP in 2027, up from 2.9% this year, amid higher defense and energy spending to shield households ahead of elections next year.
The budget also introduces a 75% cap on public-sector hiring to curb expenditure, adding to public discontent as Prime Minister Meloni acknowledges limited room for extra spending.
Meanwhile, the ECB held rates steady at its October meeting but signaled the possibility of further hikes, reinforcing market expectations of a December hike.
