Italy's BTP Yield Holds Near 3-Year Peak

Italy’s 10-year BTP yield held near 4.50%, remaining near its highest level in three years as investors assessed economic data and braced for weekend protests across France, Germany and Italy.

These demonstrations follow a wave of prostests earlier in the month over the rising cost of living and defense spending, which had turned violent.

Surging energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict has intensified inflationary pressures across Europe, with Italian inflation at a three-year high.

Still, acquired economic growth stood at 0.8% in Q3, broadly in line with the government’s 1% growth forecast for 2026.

The ECB held rates steady at its October meeting, while avoiding firm signals about the future policy path.

A rate hike in December is still expected.

Meanwhile, Italy approved its budget this week, with the deficit is seen rising to 3.4% of GDP in 2027, up from 2.9% this year, amid higher defense and energy spending to shield households ahead of elections next year.

Italy's BTP Yield Drops After ECB Decision
Italy’s 10-year BTP yield fell below 4.50%, easing from a three-year high following the ECB’s October policy decision. The ECB kept interest rates unchanged, as expected, adopting a wait-and-see approach and noting no second-round effects from higher energy prices so far. The surge in energy costs following the outbreak of the Middle East conflict has intensified fiscal pressures across Europe, as governments seek to shield households ahead of elections next year. However, Italy’s risk premium over German Bunds narrowed after the approval of its 2027 budget. Higher defence and energy spending will be financed through tax raises on individuals, banks, insurers, energy firms and the gaming industry, alongside €5 billion in contributions from financial firms and €700 million from the gambling sector. The budget will also draw partly on the EU’s NCE framework, providing greater deficit flexibility. Italy’s budget deficit is seen widening to 3.4% of GDP in 2027, up from 2.9% this year.

Italy's BTP Yield Holds Near 3-Year High
Italy’s 10-year BTP yield held around 4.55%, remaining near its highest level in three years, as traders continue to asses Europe's fiscal position against a prolongued conflict in the Middle East. Scope affirmed Italy’s sovereign credit rating at BBB+, along with a positive outlook, pending clarity on whether the government can maintain fiscal restraint in next year’s budget. This follows a similar decision by DBRS. Meanwhile, the ECB is seen leaving interest rates unchanged on Thursday. Concerns over mounting fiscal pressures had pushed yields across Europe to multi-year highs, including Italy, where its risk premium against the safe-haven German yield holds at its highest level in more than a year. The budget deficit is seen rising to 3.4% of GDP in 2027 from 2.9% this year. Proposed measures include contributions from banks and insurers, although details remain unresolved amid industry opposition, alongside potential household tax relief and increased defence and energy spending.
