2026-08-24 15:55 By Isabela Couto 1 min. read

The CAC 40 fell 0.4% to close at 8,453 on Monday, extending losses from the previous week amid uncertainty surrounding imminent US sanctions against Iran.

The measures could further restrict Iranian oil flows and push oil prices higher, creating renewed inflationary pressures.

In Europe, investors continued to price in a 25-basis-point ECB rate hike in September following the central bank’s tightening move in June.

Industrial stocks fell, with Safran down 1.1%, Thales losing 0.8%, Sanofi shedding 0.8% and EssilorLuxottica retreating 0.9%.

Financials closed mixed, with BNP Paribas and Société Générale each losing 0.6%, while AXA added 0.9%.

Meanwhile, TotalEnergies lost 1.9% as oil prices pulled back as investors booked profits ahead of the US sanctions announcement.

The tech sector tracked losses in Wall Street chipmakers, with Schneider Electric down 1.7% and STMicroelectronics losing 2%.

Luxury stocks posted gains as companies saw the first signs of a demand rebound in China.

French Stocks Start Week Higher
The CAC 40 rose 0.5% to 8,105.9 on Monday, following losses from the previous week as the continued decline in oil prices eased concerns over inflationary pressures. Sentiment improved on renewed efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, after Tehran conveyed conditions to the US through diplomatic mediators for ending the war. Sentiment was also supported by optimism ahead of this week’s closely watched Trump-Xi summit, after US and Chinese officials led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met Sunday to lay the groundwork for the meeting. Banking stocks were among the top performers, with BNP Paribas (1.2%), Crédit Agricole (1%) and Société Générale (3.7%) advancing. Schneider Electric (2.7%), Airbus (1%) and Safran (1.9%) also posted gains.

CAC 40 Retreats as Oil Rally Resumes
The CAC 40 fell 1.5% to close at 8,065 on Friday, retreating after two consecutive sessions of gains as oil prices pared losses. The oil rally resumed after satellite imagery and industry sources indicated that three pumping stations serving Saudi Arabia’s vital East-West Pipeline were damaged in last week’s attack, one more than previously assessed, while the repair timeline remains uncertain. Luxury stocks fell amid higher risk aversion, with Hermes losing 3.2%. French bond yields moved higher amid concerns over energy-driven inflationary pressures. Financials also declined, with BNP Paribas down 2.9%. Meanwhile, the Fed and the BoJ raised rates earlier this week, while the BoE left interest rates unchanged. Still, traders pared back bets on further ECB tightening despite the Fed’s more hawkish stance, as concerns that persistently high energy prices could weigh on economic growth and eventually temper inflationary pressures. The CAC 40 shed 1.4% on the week.
