The CAC 40 edged lower to around 8,719 on Tuesday, retreating from the record high reached in the previous session as investors grew more cautious amid rising uncertainty surrounding US-Iran relations.
Market sentiment weakened after President Donald Trump called on Iran to compensate victims of conflicts involving Tehran, following Iranian demands for reparations over damage caused by recent US and Israeli strikes.
The escalating rhetoric reduced expectations for a near-term breakthrough and dimmed hopes for a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, fueling concerns over continued disruptions to energy supplies and broader risk sentiment.
On the corporate front, heavyweight industrial and healthcare stocks came under modest pressure, with Airbus falling 1%, Safran slipping 0.5%, and Sanofi losing 0.3%.
Meanwhile, energy shares outperformed, as TotalEnergies gained 1.1%, supported by higher crude prices.
