France Household Spending Falls Beyond Expected

Household consumption of goods in France declined by 0.5% month-on-month in April 2026, exceeding market estimates for just a 0.1% fall and reversing a 0.9% increase in the previous month.
Energy expenditures (-2.9% vs 0.5% in March) fell sharply amid lower purchases of petroleum products as fuel prices increased and weaker gas and electricity consumption during one of the warmest Aprils on record in France.
Consumption of engineered goods also slowed markedly to 0.2% from 1.7% in March.
Spending on durable goods fell slightly (-0.5% vs 2.8%), while spending on textiles and clothing continued to rise (1.3% vs 1.2%), alongside other engineered goods (0.7% vs 0.2%).
Food consumption was broadly stable (-0.1% vs 0.1%), while tobacco consumption edged higher.
On an annual basis, household consumption of goods declined 0.4% in April, following a downwardly revised 0.4% gain in March.
