ASX 200 Marks 3rd Straight Weekly Rise, Up 1%

2026-10-16 06:04 By Farida Husna 1 min. read

The ASX 200 jumped 90 points, or 1.0%, to finish at 8,807 on Friday, reaching a near five-week high that snapped two days of declines.

Stronger U.S.

stock futures lifted sentiment as traders rotated out of major tech names into broader sectors.

Locally, softer-than-expected labor data in Australia cooled bets on a near-term hike by the Reserve Bank.

However, the upside was limited by growing caution ahead of Chinese September activity and Q3 GDP data due next week.

Gains were broad, led by tech, healthcare, manufacturing, and commercial services.

Heavyweights BHP jumped 3.5% after management and the supervisors' union at the Escondida copper mine in Chile reached a last-minute deal earlier this week, avoiding a strike at the world's largest copper.

Gold miners also advanced, boosted by Northern Star Resources (3.3%) and Evolution Mining (3.0%).

Other standouts included South32 (3.6%), REA Group (3.1%), and CSL (2.8%).

Markets rose 1% for the week, the third straight weekly gain.

Australian Stocks Head for 3rd Straight Weekly Rise
Australian shares jumped 96 points or 1.1% to 8,818 in early Friday trade, rebounding after two sessions of weakness and reaching a five-week high as Wall Street recovered overnight, with tech stocks stabilising after a recent sell-off. In top trading partner China, PBoC Governor Pan Gongsheng reaffirmed a moderately loose policy stance, signaling continued growth support while balancing financial stability. Locally, September employment unexpectedly fell, tempering bets on further RBA tightening. However, gains were capped by caution ahead of China’s Q3 GDP release next week. Nearly all sectors advanced, led by commercial services, non-energy minerals, manufacturing, and logistics. The big four banks rallied sharply, rising 1.9% to 3.3%. Maggie Beer Holdings gained 3.6% after scrapping its hamper sale plan, while Woolworths surged 4.3%, QBE Insurance rose 2.7%, and Computershare added 2.2%. For the week, markets are tracking a third straight weekly gain, up nearly 1% so far.
