2026-10-05 05:59 By Farida Husna 1 min. read

The ASX 200 ended little changed at 8,686 on Monday, as gains in electronic technology, consumer durables, and industrial services were offset by weakness in non-durables, utilities, and retail trade.

Early strength faded as U.S.

stock futures slipped, with elevated Treasury yields weighing on sentiment ahead of Fed minutes later in the week.

Locally, the Melbourne Institute’s Monthly Inflation Gauge rose 0.3% mom in September, marking the smallest increase in three months and suggesting tighter policy is curbing pressures even as inflation risks linger.

Heavyweights BHP Group rose 1.1%, and Rio Tinto added 0.7%.

Meantime, Cochlear jumped 4.2%, while Atlas Arteria rose 2.9%.

Australian Shares Rise Further as Week Begins
Australian stocks rose 32 points or 0.4% to 8,714 in early Monday trade, extending gains for a second straight session as most sectors advanced. Industrial services, consumer durables, and financials led the rise, supported by firmer U.S. equity futures after softer jobs data eased pressure on a Federal Reserve hike. Locally, September private sector growth was revised higher, driven by services, as factory output stayed weak. However, gains were tempered by holiday-thinned trade in several states, including New South Wales and Queensland, while markets in main trading partner China remained closed for the Golden Week. Meanwhile, Treasurer Chalmers said that the Middle East conflict is the central driver of Australia’s inflation challenge and keeps pressure on the Reserve Bank to stay hawkish. The big four banks added 0.4%–0.9%, with BHP and Rio Tinto up near 1%. Other standouts included Reece (1.6%) and Codan (1.9%), while QBE Insurance (-1.7%) and Lynas Rare Earths (-1%) lagged.

ASX 200 Ends 0.8% Higher, Logs First Weekly Gain in 5 Weeks
Australia’s ASX 200 rose 68 points or 0.8% to close at 8,682 on Friday, clawing back part of Thursday’s 2% slump as bargain hunters stepped in after the index hit its lowest since mid-June. Sentiment improved on cooler-than-expected U.S. PCE inflation data ahead of monthly jobs figures, with U.S. stock futures also firmer. Locally, traders await September final PMI and October confidence readings, set to be due next week. Meanwhile, August trade showed solid export growth in Australia despite a narrower surplus on surging imports. Gains were broad, led by tech, consumers, energy minerals, and retail. The big four banks added between 0.4% and 1.7%, while BHP and Rio Tinto each advanced 1.2%. Other standouts included Wisetech (6.4%), Xero (5.0%), QBE (4.2%), and Whitehaven Coal (3.9%). Offsetting moves came from Cochlear (-4.0%), Pro Medicus (-2.7%), and Goodman Group (-2.5%). For the week, the market edged up 0.2%, snapping four straight weekly declines.
