2026-08-06 06:48 By Farida Husna 1 min. read

The ASX 200 advanced 44 points, or 0.5%, to finish at a new peak of 9,272 on Thursday, extending its winning streak to four sessions.

Momentum was underpinned by a surprise June trade surplus in Australia, driven by a rebound in exports, alongside fresh inflows at the start of the financial year and confirmed gains in building permits.

U.S.

stock futures also firmed on optimism that a U.S.-Iran peace deal could end the five-month conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Glencore added to the corporate headlines, unveiling plans for a secondary Australian listing in October.

However, traders kept a cautious eye on July trade data in top trading partner China, due Friday.

Sector strength was broad, led by non-energy minerals, consumer services, and consumer names.

Evolution Mining rose 3.8%, Northern Star Resources 3.3%, and ASX Ltd. 2.1%, while three of the big four banks rose between 0.3% and 0.9%.

Offsetting moves included Woodside Energy (- 0.2%) and Wisetech Global (-1.5%).

Australian Shares Extend Rally to New Record
Australian shares continued their winning streak Thursday, climbing 59 points, or 0.6%, to a fresh high of 9,286 in early trade, buoyed by stronger U.S. futures despite Wall Street’s mixed overnight close as investors reassessed valuations following a sharp rebound in AI-linked stocks. Locally, sentiment was lifted by inflows at the start of the new financial year. Meanwhile, recent data showed private sector activity expanding at the fastest pace in six months, with services firming and factory orders rebounding. Gains were led by non-energy minerals, consumer names, healthcare, and utilities, while weakness was seen in tech, commercial services, and energy minerals. Heavyweights BHP rose 1.1%, Evolution Mining surged 5.7%, Northern Star Resources added 4.5%, and REA Group advanced 2.1%. The big four banks edged up between 0.3% and 0.5%. Traders now turn to trade figures due later today from Australia and from main trading partner China on Friday.
