Australia’s 10-year government bond yield climbed above 4.9%, hitting a six-week high as the escalating Middle East conflict drove oil prices higher and stoked inflation concerns.
The hostilities between US and Iran have now expanded beyond military targets to critical infrastructures, while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has largely come to a halt.
The US resumed its blockade of Iranian ports, and Tehran intensified attacks on ships near the Gulf, raising fears that disruptions to energy supplies could reignite global inflation and complicate the policy outlook for major central banks.
In Australia, expectations for further policy tightening remained subdued, though will be challenged by rising fuel prices.
Markets assign about a 70% chance of one final increase by December, while some expect the Reserve Bank to begin cutting rates next year.
