Milan’s FTSE MIB traded nearly flat at around 49,500 on Wednesday, halting a three-day gain as investors turned cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision later in the day.

Domestically, Italian banking consolidation remained in focus after Intesa Sanpaolo received ECB approval to take control of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, clearing a key hurdle for its €32 billion takeover offer.

The offer document is expected to receive approval from market regulator Consob early next month.

However, Intesa fell 0.5% and MPS lost 0.2%.

Investors also assessed corporate earnings, with Stellantis climbing 3.0% after reporting higher third-quarter operating income and reaffirming its full-year guidance.

Technoprobe gained 1.6%, while Banco BPM advanced 0.8%.

On the downside, Telecom Italia fell 1.4%, while Campari and Brunello Cucinelli lost 1.1% and 1.0%, respectively.
