FTSE MIB Closes Higher

2026-08-28 16:10 By Larissa Caser 1 min. read

The FTSE MIB rose 0.7% to 52,654 on Friday, supported by upbeat sentiment across sectors.

Merger talks continued to overshadow financials, with Generali (0.5%) saying MPS’s (0.3%) takeover bid for Banca Generali offers “growth opportunities.” Unipol's (1.2%) Chairman said MPS would “lead” a merger with BPER (2.2%) and become the second-largest banking group in Italy.

Meanwhile, Fed sentiment turned hawkish following Fed Chairman Warsh's statements that if inflation wasn't returning to target, they "would have work to do".

The ECB is also expected to raise rates in September, potentially weighing on lenders.

European automakers are feeling the squeeze from Chinese carmakers’ advances, with Stellantis (2.3%) reportedly allowing Chinese automakers to share their factories to ease overcapacity.

Utilities gained as European gas prices declined. Meanwhile, defense stocks underperformed following reports of a possible reversal by the UK Finance Minister on planned defense spending.

FTSE MIB Approaches 4-Week High
The FTSE MIB rose to around 52,400 on Wednesday, approaching a four-week high, as falling oil prices continued to support sentiment and ease some concerns over inflationary pressures. Oil prices declined for a sixth consecutive session as signs of a potential US-Iran agreement raised hopes of an end to the war and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Heavyweight financials were among the top performers, rebounding after coming under pressure in the previous session amid opposition from European banks to proposed EU rules on sovereign exposures. Notable gainers included UniCredit (+1.6%), Intesa Sanpaolo (+1%), Banco BPM (+1.9%) and Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (+1.1%). Luxury names also advanced, with Ferrari rising 1.5%, while Moncler and Brunello Cucinelli gained 1.2% and 0.8%, respectively. Utilities shares also traded higher.

FTSE MIB Edges Lower
The FTSE MIB edged down 0.5% to 52,096 on Tuesday, weighed down by heavyweight financials. The banking sector underperformed following a petition signed by major European banks, including Italy’s banking lobby ABI, opposing the EU’s proposal to address the concentration of sovereign exposures among banks. The ABI stated that the measure could negatively affect the public debt market, which is already under pressure from a global sell-off. Banco BPM, Unipol, Mediobanca, Banca Mediolanum, BPER and MPS all fell more than 1%. Poste Italiane fell 4%, leading losses on the index, following its bid for all ordinary shares of Telecom Italia (-3.3%). Utilities also underperformed as European gas prices remained elevated. Meanwhile, tech stocks STMicroelectronics (4.4%) and Prysmian (2.5%) extended gains from the previous session, although Technoprobe fell 0.6% following its positive debut on the index the previous day.
