The FTSE MIB was flat at 48,200 on Monday as investors returned from an extended holiday weekend to continue assessing developments in the Middle East alongside renewed concerns over trade tensions.
President Trump said he would raise tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25%, while the EU Commission indicated it is considering possible response measures.
Auto stocks were mixed, with Ferrari declining over 1% while Stellantis rose 0.5%.
Other laggards included Enel (-1.4%), Eni (-1%), and Tenaris (-1.7%).
These were offset by gains in UniCredit (+1.1%), Prysmian (+2%), Moncler (+1.8%), while STMicroelectronics climbed more than 4%, tracking strength in global tech peers.
Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions remained in focus after Trump announced plans to assist commercial vessels unable to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
However, a senior Iranian official warned that any US involvement in the strait would be viewed as a violation of the ceasefire.
