The FTSE MIB climbed 0.7% to around 47,800 on Tuesday, hitting its highest level since 2000, as market sentiment improved on renewed expectations that the US and Iran may resume ceasefire negotiations.

Both sides are reportedly considering another round of discussions before the current two-week ceasefire expires, easing concerns over further escalation in tensions.

This comes after President Trump’s decision to impose a US naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, a move that has heightened uncertainty in global energy markets.

The index gains were led by heavyweight financials, namely UniCredit (+1.4%), Intesa Sanpaolo (+1.1%), Mediobanca (+1.1%), and Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (+1.2%).

Luxury stocks also traded higher, including Ferrari (+1.3%), Moncler (+2.0%), Stellantis (+2.8%), and Brunello Cucinelli (+0.4%).

Meanwhile, defence stock Leonardo fell over 1%.

FTSE MIB Near Highest Since 2000
The FTSE MIB was little changed around 48,190 on Wednesday, hovering near its highest levels since 2000, as markets continued to assess developments in the Middle East while digesting fresh corporate updates. Reports indicated that Washington and Tehran are moving toward another round of negotiations in the coming days, even as a US naval blockade continues to restrict access through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Stellantis rose over 3% after reporting estimated consolidated shipments of 1.4 million units in Q1 2026, marking a 12% year-on-year increase. Among banks, Mediobanca gained 1.9%, while Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena added 2.5%. On the downside, luxury names such as Brunello Cucinelli (-1.5%) and Moncler (-2.3%) led losses, tracking weakness across European peers including Kering and Hermès after disappointing Q1 earnings, which fueled concerns that Middle East tensions are weighing on luxury demand.
