Italy’s FTSE MIB climbed 0.8% to above 46,100 in early trading on Wednesday, marking a second consecutive session of gains, with financial stocks leading the advance.

Shares of Mediobanca surged more than 8% after majority-owner Banca Monte dei Paschi di Sienna said it would delist it while preserving its brand.

Monte dei Paschi di Siena gained 3.6%.

Other major financials also advanced, including UniCredit (+1.2%), Intesa Sanpaolo (+1.3%), Banco BPM (+1.7%), BPER Banca (+1.8%), and Banca Mediolanum (+1.7%).

Outside the banking sector, defence group Leonardo climbed 2.5%.

Investors now await the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last meeting later in the day for further insights on the US rate outlook.

Geopolitics also remained in focus, with Iran reporting progress in nuclear talks with the US, while peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia continued.

FTSE MIB Recovers Partially on Iran-Oman Agreement
The FTSE MIB fell 0.2% to close at 45,625 on Thursday, turning muted after sharp morning losses as Iran and Oman reportedly drafted a protocol to monitor transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Global markets traded sharply lower after US President Trump signaled the Iran war would continue for weeks, but partially recovered on the transit protocol report. Meanwhile, oil prices continued to surge, fueling stagflation fears. Bond yields edged up and the BTP-Bund spread widened, pressuring the financial sector. UniCredit lost 2.5%, MPS fell 2.8%, and Mediobanca dropped 2.5%. STMicroelectronics led losses at 2.8% amid US semiconductor market weakness. In contrast, Eni advanced 4.3% on surging oil prices. Other gainers included Stellantis, up 4.1% after reporting a 10.3% annual rise in sales in March. Also, Generali was up 1%, and Enel gained 0.6%. Markets in Italy will be closed Friday for the Easter holiday.
