The FTSE MIB fell more than 1% to 46,280 on Wednesday, following a muted session the previous day, weighed down by losses in index-heavy financials.

FinecoBank dropped sharply after reporting a stable net profit for 2025, while Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena fell 2% following news that board member Stefano Di Stefano is leaving amid an insider trading investigation.

Its peers were also in the red, including Banca Mediolanum (-7.4%), Mediobanca (-2.3%), UniCredit (-1.4%), and Intesa Sanpaolo (-2.2%).

Defense group Leonardo also declined more than 1% after reports indicated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to announce presidential elections and a referendum on a potential peace deal.

On the upside, Ferrari gained over 1% following upbeat guidance that suggested strong demand for its luxury supercars.

On the economic front, Italy’s industrial output rose 3.2% year-on-year in December, marking the strongest growth in over three years.

FTSE MIB Recovers Partially on Iran-Oman Agreement
The FTSE MIB fell 0.2% to close at 45,625 on Thursday, turning muted after sharp morning losses as Iran and Oman reportedly drafted a protocol to monitor transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Global markets traded sharply lower after US President Trump signaled the Iran war would continue for weeks, but partially recovered on the transit protocol report. Meanwhile, oil prices continued to surge, fueling stagflation fears. Bond yields edged up and the BTP-Bund spread widened, pressuring the financial sector. UniCredit lost 2.5%, MPS fell 2.8%, and Mediobanca dropped 2.5%. STMicroelectronics led losses at 2.8% amid US semiconductor market weakness. In contrast, Eni advanced 4.3% on surging oil prices. Other gainers included Stellantis, up 4.1% after reporting a 10.3% annual rise in sales in March. Also, Generali was up 1%, and Enel gained 0.6%. Markets in Italy will be closed Friday for the Easter holiday.
