The FTSE MIB hovered around 45,510 on the first trading day of February, after posting gains in January, as investors weighed global developments.
Global markets were unsettled after President Trump nominated Kevin Warsh as the next Federal Reserve Chair, who is seen as potentially more hawkish than other contenders.
Attention is also on US-Iran negotiations, with reports indicating that both countries have signaled a willingness to engage in talks aimed at easing tensions.
Among the notable decliners were STMicroelectronics (-4%), Eni (-1.8%), Prysmian (-2.3%), and Tenaris (-2.4%).
These losses, however, were partly offset by gains in Assicurazioni Generali (+2.2%), Unipol Gruppo (+1.9%), Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (+1.6%), and Bper Banca (+1.3%).
