The FTSE MIB closed marginally up at 44,970 in the last trading session of 2025, the highest since January 2001, as broad sector strength supported the index.
Financial and technology stocks led the advance, with UniCredit (+2.3%), Intesa Sanpaolo (+1.4%), Leonardo SpA (+1.4%), Enel (+0.7%), Eni (+1%), and STMicroelectronics (+1.5%) posting notable gains.
Further bolstering sentiment, Italy’s Parliament approved the government’s 2026 budget, which includes measures aimed at reducing the deficit to 2.8% of GDP, down from the previously projected 3%, aligning with EU requirements.
The budget, totaling roughly €22 billion, prioritizes support for families, employment, businesses, and healthcare.
The index posted a record 31.5% annual gain, marking the second-best performance in Europe after the Madrid Ibex, powered by banks and defense stocks.
